A used truck can be an economical solution for your business needs. However, as always when buying a used vehicle, there are some risks involved. Knowing what to look for can save you a lot of money in repairs down the line. Here are some tips to help you get the most for your money.
Give yourself plenty of time to research all your options.
You might think about what color and trim level you want. However, more importantly, you should consider how you’ll be using your new truck and what factors are most important: safety, fuel-efficiency, price, etc.
If you intend to use your new truck for towing, the weight of the truck including the weight of the tow trailer is also a factor to consider. You want to make sure the truck you buy can handle your towing needs. A heavy-duty truck will typically cost more than a light-weight, but it will be able to carry and withstand heavier loads.
Decide on an engine and axle ratio. Advances in manufacturing mean that newer trucks now have more fuel-efficient engines. For example, today’s V6 engine is as powerful as a V8 engine produced 10 years ago while providing better fuel economy than the V8.
Also, think about whether you’ll be using your truck to transport passengers. When it comes to cab size, trucks with regular-sized cabs tend to be more affordable but don’t provide much passenger space. Keep in mind that more cab space usually means you have less bed space. You can choose between a crew cab, a double cab, an extended cab, or a regular cab.
Check for physical issues
Examples include rust on the exterior, any leakage, or wear on the tires’ tread. Examine the truck only in daylight. Even a well-lit garage may conceal defects and hamper a good inspection. If there are any raised spots on the roof, it means rust underneath. A more extended inspection of that area might be necessary if you want to buy that vehicle. Run your hand along the bottom of the doors and check for hard, rusty edges. Check the panels along the body from back to front; if they seem wavy or uneven, they may need a closer inspection by a professional.
Test drive the vehicle
Check all switches and extras on the car (lights, air, etc.). Start the engine and make sure there are no knocks or thuds. Put your car in drive with your foot on the brake to see if it idles okay. Once started, accelerate very slowly to see if the transmission up shifts smoothly. Then check acceleration up to highway speed for engine smoothness. When it’s safe, test the emergency brake as well. It’s always a good idea to have another person with you to help detect strange sounds or behavior. Oftentimes the driver is too excited or nervous upon driving the vehicle for the first time.
Buy your truck from a reliable source, with a warranty if possible.
To play it safe, you’ll want to buy your truck from a dealership and obtain a warranty as well as any and all maintenance records. Additionally, if anything seems off and to make sure that no problem goes undiagnosed, your safest bet is always to bring in the truck for a full inspection by a professional.
