There are so many falsities of the roadway and the trucking industry in general. This profession is one that is very misunderstood and oftentimes not taken as seriously as it should be. Truck drivers are upstanding workers who have a high level of professionalism and loyalty to their work. We are taking some of our favorite trucking industry myths and breaking them down!
Myth 1: Truckers rarely shower
Absolutely false. Just because many truckers work long hours when going on longer hauls, that does not mean their work is cause for sacrificing personal hygiene. Industrial truckers have many options including utilizing rest stop and truck stop facilities. Some trucking fleets also have facilities where drivers can go to shower and freshen up during their work travels. Many drivers have also reported using their gym membership at a national chain to shower in a clean and trusted environment throughout the country. The idea that a truck driver is unkept and lacks personal hygiene is definitely a myth.
Myth 2: They are sedentary and lazy
Another false claim! While truck drivers may be required to sit for longer haul drives, they are up and moving under intense time and physical pressures when not driving. Most truckers are also responsible for helping load and unload their vehicles.
Myth 3: Only men can be truck drivers
Untrue! Anyone that is able-bodied and passes a series of rigorous CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) training and testing may be a prime candidate for a career in industrial trucking services. Gender and other factors do not play a part like the need to have proper training and practice safe driving.
Myth 4: They only care about fast timing and speed
Another false one! Professional commercial truck drivers take their jobs seriously and are always expected to practice the safest driving skills. The trucking industry is under strict guidelines by the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) to ensure the utmost safety on interstates and other roadways. Additionally, there are time restrictions put in place by federal agencies to limit the number of hours a driver can be behind the wheel to decrease the risk of falling asleep while driving. Amongst many other regulations, drivers are safe because for many, driving is not just their job, but their passion too. And they want that to be taken seriously and respected for the pride they take in their work.
Just like any other professional industry, truck drivers are highly-motivated and dedicated individuals who help power the nation’s other industries. Many of the myths mentioned above are not only false, but may be insulting as well. Now you know the truth!
